UkonMAX® is a standardized extract of Turmeric. Turmeric is one of the oldest known spices with more than 4000 years of application ranging from flavor, medicine, dye and condiment. Curcumin is the most abundantly found and extensively studied plant phenol in Turmeric. Studies have reported curcumin is known to exert an antioxidant effect by removing free radicals and an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting the activation of NF-κB. Studies have also confirmed its application in preventing heart failure and effective against cancers and Alzheimer’s disease.

The absorption efficacy of curcuminoids is too low to exhibit its proper therapeutic value. Considering this UkonMax®-water dispersion grade was developed to improve bioavailability and thereby efficacy. Using human Caco-2 cell monolayer, the permeability efficacy of UkonMax®-WD was evaluated and compared with that of regular 95% pure curcuminoids. Caco-2 model predicts the in vivo absorption of drugs across the gut wall by measuring the rate of transport of a compound across the Caco-2 cell line.The results showed the permeability coefficient of UkonMax®-WD was 7.03-fold higher than 95% pure curcuminoids. Thus, UkonMax®-WD may be more suitable dietary supplement ingredient with greater bioavailability to exert clinical benefits in humans at a lower dosage.
