The Challenge

A leading Japanese healthcare company, widely recognized for its expertise in eye health and consumer wellness products, sought to extend its eye health portfolio beyond traditional supplements and pharmaceutical formats. The objective was to develop an innovative snack product that would provide scientifically supported eye health benefits while delivering the taste, convenience, and enjoyment consumers expect from everyday snacking.

The challenge was simple to define but complex to execute: create a product that consumers would choose for its flavour and eating experience first, while incorporating clinically supported levels of lutein and zeaxanthin in a format capable of maintaining stability throughout commercial production and retail distribution.

With increasing screen exposure becoming a daily reality for consumers of all ages, the demand for convenient eye health solutions continues to grow. The customer recognized an opportunity to bridge the gap between functional nutrition and everyday snacking, creating a product that could encourage consistent daily intake through a familiar and enjoyable format.

The Approach

We partnered closely with the customer's product development, regulatory, and manufacturing teams to develop a coated nut snack fortified with VitaLutein®, our premium lutein and zeaxanthin ingredient platform, delivered in an appealing berry yogurt flavour profile.

Four key technical challenges defined the project:

Uniform Distribution of Active Ingredients

Achieving consistent delivery of functional ingredients across the coated nut surface was essential to ensure dosage uniformity and product quality. We worked alongside the manufacturing team to optimize ingredient particle size, coating composition, and application parameters, resulting in homogeneous distribution of the active ingredients while maintaining visual appeal and coating integrity.

Protection of Carotenoids During Processing and Storage

Lutein and zeaxanthin are naturally sensitive to heat, light, and oxidation. To address this challenge, we developed a formulation strategy that minimized ingredient exposure during processing while utilizing the coating matrix as an additional protective barrier. Careful control of manufacturing conditions helped preserve ingredient integrity throughout production and storage.

Preservation of Stability Throughout Shelf Life

The product underwent stability evaluations to verify that active ingredient levels remained within specification throughout the intended shelf life.
