Ruscus aculeatus is native to Mediterranean Europe and Africa. The English name - Butcher's Broom - derives from the use by the European butchers of the stems to clean their cutting board not only because of their stiffness and solidity, but also because of the essential oil which was credited with antibacterial properties. In Germany, roots are designated as medicines, and it is known that the extract taken from the roots reduces the swelling caused by poor circulation of the legs (chronic venous insufficiency) including varicose veins of the lower limbs. Being active on the swelling of the lower body, it is interesting as a women's product material.
